Watching it at first, some of <em>The Brothers Bloom</em>'s creative and thematic elements seem like they're on loan from Paul Thomas Anderson (opening narration by Ricky Jay, pop-whiz-bang camera work, the troubled-but-tender relationship between the two brothers) while others feel as if they've been cribbed from Wes Anderson (deadpan confessions, whimsical set design, a parallel-universe setting where people still travel to Europe by steamship). The truth is, as much as <em>The Brothers Bloom</em> may feel like it's cribbing from other films at first, this is Rian Johnson's movie, and even if my more dreary and discerning critical faculties told me the final act goes on, perhaps, a beat too long, my inner moviegoer was sitting bolt upright, smiling, bright-eyed and carried away. <br /><br />Brothers Stephen (<a href="http://www.moviefone.com/celebrity/mark-ruffalo/1937961/main">Mark Ruffalo</a>) and Bloom (<a href="http://www.moviefone.com/celebrity/adrien-brody/1780066/main">Adrian Brody</a>) have grown up on the make, in a world of, as Jay's stage-setting narration puts it, "... grifters, ropers, faro fixers, tales drawn long and tall. ..." Stephen builds cons; Bloom gets close to the marks. Stephen's work on their scams is a weird, lucrative form of self-expression; as Bloom puts it, "My brother writes <span style="font-style: italic;">cons </span>the way Russians write <span style="font-style: italic;">novels</span>. ..." Bloom's work on their schemes is a weird, lucrative form of self-loathing; Bloom learns early on that playing a part means never having to be yourself, that he, when " ... being as he wasn't, could be as he wished to be." Stephen wants more. Bloom wants out.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/comedy/" rel="tag">Comedy</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/theatrical-reviews/" rel="tag">Theatrical Reviews</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/festival-reports/" rel="tag">Festival Reports</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/toronto-international-film-festival/" rel="tag">Toronto International Film Festival</a></p><p><a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/09/04/tiff-review-the-brothers-bloom-/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TIFF Review: The Brothers Bloom</em></a></p><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;"> </p><p><a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/09/04/tiff-review-the-brothers-bloom-/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/forward/1305000/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/09/04/tiff-review-the-brothers-bloom-/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?a=aT0eIl"><img src="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?i=aT0eIl" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?a=R5LH2l"><img src="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?i=R5LH2l" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~r/weblogsinc/cinematical/~4/383781205" height="1" width="1"/> [via http://www.cinematical.com/ @ September 5, 2008 @ 3:15am] Fri, 05 Sep 2008 03:15:00 +0000 http://.feedables.com/story/931686/TIFF-Review-The-Brothers-Bloom BREAKING: 'Ghostbusters 3' is (Maybe) ON! http://.feedables.com/go/931018/BREAKING-Ghostbusters-3-is-Maybe-ON! <img width="170" vspace="4" hspace="4" height="170" border="1" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.cinematical.com/media/2008/09/ghostbusterslogolarge-(2).jpg" />We've stayed away from all the <em>Ghostbusters </em>rumors these past couple days because last time we crossed this road, we were told nothing existed. Well, seems that's not at all true: <a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117991624.html?categoryid=10&amp;cs=1"><em>Variety </em></a>reports that<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1072409/"> Lee Eisenberg</a> and <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1969144/">Gene Stupnitsky</a> (<em>The Office, Year One</em>) have been asked to write a script for a <em>Ghostbusters </em>sequel (reported earlier today by <a href="http://www.pajiba.com/ghostbusters-3-secretly-in-production.htm">Pajiba.com</a>) that may or may not "pass the torch to a new group of ghost chasers." Funnily enough -- and even though he flat out told us he had nothing to do with it -- this is totally in line with those early rumors that "The Apatow Clan" would be involved in some capacity; namely Seth Rogen. When <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/08/04/confirmed-seth-rogen-knows-nothing-of-a-ghostbusters-sequel/">we asked him about it </a>during the <em>Pineapple Express</em> junket, however, the man denied knowing a thing. Then again, he's an actor ... and he's paid pretty damn well to pretend.<br /><br />The Apatow connection is also there in that these two writers are behind the Apatow-produced <em>Year One</em>, which, ahem, is being directed by Harold Ramis -- who, in case you forgot, played Dr. Egon Spengler in both <em>Ghostbuster </em>movies. No word from Columbia Pictures on the project, and <em>Variety </em>is simply throwing out all the same fluff that's been reported on other sites for months now. Could we see a reunion and a torch passing? Will the Apatow folks take over the <em>Ghostbusters </em>franchise? I'd certainly be down for it. <br /><br />You?<br /><br />(And now we shall continue to run circles around this monster until someone finally caves ...)<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/action-and-adventure/" rel="tag">Action</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/comedy/" rel="tag">Comedy</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/deals/" rel="tag">Deals</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/fandom/" rel="tag">Fandom</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/newsstand/" rel="tag">Newsstand</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/remakes-and-sequels/" rel="tag">Remakes and Sequels</a></p><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;"> </p><p><a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/09/04/breaking-ghostbusters-3-is-on/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/forward/1305017/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/09/04/breaking-ghostbusters-3-is-on/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?a=9D34Fl"><img src="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?i=9D34Fl" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?a=ulOHll"><img src="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?i=ulOHll" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~r/weblogsinc/cinematical/~4/383710243" height="1" width="1"/> [via http://www.cinematical.com/ @ September 5, 2008 @ 1:05am] Fri, 05 Sep 2008 01:05:00 +0000 http://.feedables.com/story/931018/BREAKING-Ghostbusters-3-is-Maybe-ON! Tufts University "Nerd Girls" Are Hot, Gadget-Loving Engineers On A Mission (Read: Not a Mirage) [Nerd Girls] http://.feedables.com/go/378200/Tufts-University-Nerd-Girls-Are-Hot-Gadget-Loving-Engineers-On-A-Mission-Read-Not-a-Mirage-Nerd-Girls <p><img src="http://gizmodo.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2008/06/n1056385096_30071353_4288.jpg" align="left" hspace="4" vspace="2" style="display:block;display:block;"/>Newsweek's latest issue, due out tomorrow, profiles a subject near and dear to many a geek guy's heart and loins: hot women. But there's a twist! These are women with brains to match their good looks, and that's exactly the point. Called the Nerd Girls, this team of twenty-something Tufts University coeds was created by founder Karen Panetta to dismantle two common "myths." First, that boys are better at math and science than girls; and second, that a female engineer is socially inept girl with no sense of style. Do the Nerd Girls succeed at demolishing stereotypes? We've covered the rising tide of <a href="http://gizmodo.com/373846/girl-geeks-on-the-rise-says-report">girl geeks</a> here before, and the Tufts team has already built a solar powered car (what have <em>you</em> done lately?), but by all means take a look at what these "Nerdettes" have to offer and decide for yourself.</p> <p>Lest you still be doubtful even after arriving here after the fold, here's a taste of the Newsweek profiles for a few of The Nerd Girls team:</p> <blockquote> <p>The Nerd Girls may not look like your stereotypical pocket-protector-loving misfits—their adviser, Karen Panetta, has a thing for pink heels—but they're part of a growing breed of young women who are claiming the nerd label for themselves. In doing so, they're challenging the notion of what a geek should look like, either by intentionally sexing up their tech personas, or by simply finding no disconnect between their geeky pursuits and more traditionally girly interests such as fashion, makeup and high heels. In fact, calling them "nerd" is no insult at all—the Nerd Girls have T shirts emblazoned with the slogan. The crew includes Cristina Sanchez, a master's student in biomedical engineering (and a former cheerleader) who can talk for hours about aerodynamics. Caitrin Eaton, a freshman, asked her boyfriend for a soldering iron last Christmas. Juniors Courtney Mario and Perry Ross giggle when they talk about what fascinated them most about "No Country for Old Men": how did the assassin's air gun work?</p> </blockquote> <p><img src="http://gizmodo.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2008/06/NerdGirls-standing2.jpg" class="center">If you're going to act, fellas, act now, because each of these young women is already on track to secure at least $70,000 after they graduate. When these two things are in sync, the end result is something truly impressive - a moving story that appeals to your heart and soul without insulting your intelligence, a film full of big scenes that never stoops to the most obvious possible iteration of those big scenes, a movie loaded with great and sincere performances from the top down. When the two parts of <a href="http://www.moviefone.com/movie/rachel-getting-married/34744/main"><em>Rachel Getting Married</em></a> fall out of synch - as they do, most notably, in the last third of the film during Demme's raucous, joyous post-wedding reception - it's less catastrophic than it is curious, and the final film is still very much worth watching.<br /><br />Rachel (<a href="http://www.moviefone.com/celebrity/rosemarie-dewitt/2264860/main">Rosemarie DeWitt</a>) is getting married; her little sister Kym (<a href="http://www.moviefone.com/celebrity/anne-hathaway/2029985/main">Anne Hathaway</a>) is coming for the big event ... which involves getting picked up from her most recent stay at a rehab clinic. A cynic could look at Hathaway's part in <em>Rachel Getting Married</em> and paraphrase Robert Downey Jr. in <em>Tropic Thunder</em>: Always go full rehab. And while it's true that the Academy and critics tend to reward gritty, hyperbolic portraits of drug-addiction's misery, the fact is that Hathaway's Kym is not quite as simple as that. Kym knows all the things she's done wrong; she also knows she'll keep doing some of them. Immediately, in the car, the lines of battle are drawn, with Kym going on the offense as part of her defense mechanisms, asking her dad (<a href="http://www.moviefone.com/celebrity/bill-irwin/1318105/main">Bill Irwin</a>) and step-mother (<a href="http://www.moviefone.com/celebrity/anna-deavere-smith/1830908/main">Anna Deavere Smith</a>) about how Rachel's holding up: "Are all of her latent food issues coming up? Is she still hoarding Snickers and Cool Whip under the bed?" Soon, Kym's plunged into the thick of the preparations for Rachel's wedding, responding to the chaos by adding to it. ...<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/comedy/" rel="tag">Comedy</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/drama/" rel="tag">Drama</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/theatrical-reviews/" rel="tag">Theatrical Reviews</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/festival-reports/" rel="tag">Festival Reports</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/toronto-international-film-festival/" rel="tag">Toronto International Film Festival</a></p><p><a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/09/04/tiff-review-rachel-getting-married/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TIFF Review: Rachel Getting Married</em></a></p><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;"> </p><p><a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/09/04/tiff-review-rachel-getting-married/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/forward/1304187/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/09/04/tiff-review-rachel-getting-married/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?a=IjnbLl"><img src="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?i=IjnbLl" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?a=48xvHl"><img src="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?i=48xvHl" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~r/weblogsinc/cinematical/~4/383713149" height="1" width="1"/> [via http://www.cinematical.com/ @ September 5, 2008 @ 1:32am] Fri, 05 Sep 2008 01:32:00 +0000 http://.feedables.com/story/931017/TIFF-Review-Rachel-Getting-Married Google Chrome - A New Chapter in Browser History? http://.feedables.com/go/930696/Google-Chrome--A-New-Chapter-in-Browser-History Chrome, a Google Browser. As I got older, my love affair was renewed when I discovered the Cult of the Director. The Cult of the Director allows one to look at movies in a far more personal way. It's an ongoing game; one can discover long-forgotten works, or piece together old puzzles, but one can also look ahead and guess how a director's career arc will come together. Basically, there are roughly four kinds of directors. The most common is the kind with no personality, and perhaps very little skill, someone like <a href="http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0005367/">Brian Robbins</a>, the director of <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/07/11/review-meet-dave/"><em>Meet Dave</em></a><span style="font-style: normal;"> (58 screens). Many of these folks eventually disappear without ever making much of a mark. After that, we get the craftsman, someone with lots of skill and talent but still no personality. These guys are the most interesting to talk to; they're unpretentious and tell the best stories. <a href="http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0026442/">Brad Anderson</a>, the director of </span><a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/07/18/review-transsiberian/"><em>Transsiberian</em></a><span style="font-style: normal;"> (81 screens), is a good example.</span> <p> </p> <p class="MsoNormal">Then there's a weird category of directors who have somehow come to popular attention, despite a lack of skill and/or a lack of personality. These can range from moneymakers like <a href="http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0711840/">Brett Ratner</a> to Oscar winners like <a href="http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0000165/">Ron Howard</a>. But of course, since we're talking about live human beings here, there's a lot of wiggle room in these categories, and I could probably establish several sub-categories. Not to mention that any director's career can suddenly change course at any point. Yes, even Brett Ratner could suddenly make a good film. (I'm not saying he <em>will</em><span style="font-style: normal;">, just that he </span><em>could</em><span style="font-style: normal;">.) These people manage to stay on top through a lucky combination of subject matter and promotion. Even though films like </span><a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/06/20/review-brick-lane/"><em>Brick Lane</em></a><span style="font-style: normal;"> (31 screens) and </span><a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/06/06/review-mongol/"><em>Mongol</em></a><span style="font-style: normal;"> (16 screens) have no skill or personality, they </span><em>seem</em><span style="font-style: normal;"> like great films because of their stories and packaging.</span></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/columns/" rel="tag">Columns</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/400-screens-400-blows/" rel="tag">400 Screens, 400 Blows</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/indie/" rel="tag">Cinematical Indie</a></p><p><a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/09/04/400-screens-400-blows-cult-of-the-director/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>400 Screens, 400 Blows - Cult of the Director</em></a></p><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;"> </p><p><a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/09/04/400-screens-400-blows-cult-of-the-director/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/forward/1303918/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/09/04/400-screens-400-blows-cult-of-the-director/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?a=3HIPMl"><img src="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?i=3HIPMl" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?a=bqL2xl"><img src="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?i=bqL2xl" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~r/weblogsinc/cinematical/~4/383750115" height="1" width="1"/> [via http://www.cinematical.com/ @ September 5, 2008 @ 2:15am] Fri, 05 Sep 2008 02:15:00 +0000 http://.feedables.com/story/931687/400-Screens-400-Blows--Cult-of-the-Director Behold Spike Lee's Miracle http://.feedables.com/go/938827/Behold-Spike-Lees-Miracle New images from Miracle at St. Anna.<img src="http://feeds.ign.com/~r/ignfeeds/movies/~4/384609767" height="1" width="1"/> [via http://movies.ign.com/ @ September 5, 2008 @ 9:40pm] Fri, 05 Sep 2008 21:40:00 +0000 http://.feedables.com/story/938827/Behold-Spike-Lees-Miracle Gerard Butler Q&A http://.feedables.com/go/928655/Gerard-Butler-QA 300 star Gerard Butler plays a loveable low-level gangster in Guy Ritchie's new comedy caper RocknRolla. We have so much in store for you this year, it's best if you just sit back, relax and thank your lucky stars that someone else is in charge of fighting the crowds, the snarky journalists and the lack of sleep. <br /><br />Most of our coverage will land on the main page here, but you'll always be able to find everything in one place over <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/08/15/tiff-2008/">on our official <strong>TIFF Hub</strong></a>. Additionally, down there to the right of your screen you'll see a special <strong>Cinematical TIFF Widget</strong> housing quick links to all our TIFF coverage. Best of all, you can snag that and put it wherever you want (your site, your friends' site, the site of a total stranger) -- this way you (and your readers) will always know what's going on in Toronto. Could we make it any easier? <br /><br />So, are you ready to check out a sneak peak of this fall's hottest movies? Do I even need to ask that? Enjoy the coverage, and let us know if there's anything you'd especially like to see.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/site-announcements/" rel="tag">Site Announcements</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/festival-reports/" rel="tag">Festival Reports</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/fandom/" rel="tag">Fandom</a>, <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/category/toronto-international-film-festival/" rel="tag">Toronto International Film Festival</a></p><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;"> </p><p><a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/09/05/cinematicals-tiff-2008-coverage-underway/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/forward/1305464/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/09/05/cinematicals-tiff-2008-coverage-underway/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?a=CpUCl"><img src="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?i=CpUCl" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?a=5P67l"><img src="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~f/weblogsinc/cinematical?i=5P67l" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.cinematical.com/~r/weblogsinc/cinematical/~4/384298616" height="1" width="1"/> [via http://www.cinematical.com/ @ September 5, 2008 @ 5:02pm] Fri, 05 Sep 2008 17:02:00 +0000 http://.feedables.com/story/935611/Cinematicals-TIFF-2008-Coverage-Underway! Creating your own custom gestures&mdash;like my 'l' for Lifehacker gesture in the screenshot&mdash;is a breeze. If you're a fan of saving time and keystrokes with global mouse gesture tools like <a href="http://lifehacker.com/software/mouse/download-of-the-day-strokeit-windows-250735.php">prevously mentioned StrokeIt</a> but feel lost at a computer without your favorite gestures, the portable Mazzick could be just the ticket for you.</p> <div class="related"><a href="http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=18983">Mazzick</a> [via <a href="http://shellcity.net/?egg=b">Shell Extension City</a>]</div> <br style="clear: both;"/> <img alt="" style="border: 0; height:1px; width:1px;" border="0" src="http://www.pheedo.com/img.phdo?i=5e079f2ae0fe6037008ddd01c288f8e2" height="1" width="1"/> <img src="http://www.pheedo.com/feeds/tracker.php?i=5e079f2ae0fe6037008ddd01c288f8e2" style="display: none;" border="0" height="1" width="1" alt=""/> <p><a href="http://feeds.gawker.com/~a/lifehacker/full?a=vQJDlH"><img src="http://feeds.gawker.com/~a/lifehacker/full?i=vQJDlH" border="0"></img></a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/lifehacker/full?a=irf3L"><img src="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/lifehacker/full?i=irf3L" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/lifehacker/full?a=Zs6tL"><img src="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/lifehacker/full?i=Zs6tL" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/lifehacker/full?a=29NDl"><img src="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/lifehacker/full?i=29NDl" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/lifehacker/full?a=ecOOl"><img src="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/lifehacker/full?i=ecOOl" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.gawker.com/~r/lifehacker/full/~4/384559292" height="1" width="1"/> [via http://lifehacker.com @ September 5, 2008 @ 10:00pm] Fri, 05 Sep 2008 22:00:00 +0000 http://.feedables.com/story/938215/Mazzick-Puts-Mouse-Gestures-on-Your-Thumb-Drive-Featured-Windows-Download Shelf Web Pages Instantly (and Get Back to Work) with ReadItLater [Screenshot Tour] http://.feedables.com/go/937476/Shelf-Web-Pages-Instantly-and-Get-Back-to-Work-with-ReadItLater-Screenshot-Tour <p><img src="http://lifehacker.com/assets/images/lifehacker/2008/09/riloptionsheader.png" align="left" hspace="4" vspace="2" width="494" height="246" style="display:block;float:none;" /><br> Surely you come across web pages during the workday that are completely unrelated to actual work, but that you'd love to save for later&mdash;and the <a href="http://lifehacker.com/396448/read-it-later-adds-firefox-3-integration-offline-reading">previously mentioned</a> (and <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5039968/mozilla-crowns-best-firefox-3-extensions">award winning</a>) Firefox extension <a href="http://readitlaterlist.com/">ReadItLater</a> does just that <i>really</i> well. Once ReadItLater is part of your everyday workflow, it's super-easy to park long articles or interesting tidbits you want to look at over lunch or at home in a "staging area" that's available as an RSS feed, in your regular bookmarks, and even on other computers. ReadItLater may appear unnecessary to power bookmarkers who keep a "later" folder or tag, but on closer inspection it does offer features that make hitting the snooze button on a link much easier.</p> <h3 style="font-size: 120%; margin-top: 20px;">The Killer Feature: One-click Park</h3> <p><img src="http://lifehacker.com/assets/images/lifehacker/2008/09/ril-checkbox.png" width="154" height="61" r="" class="right" align="right"> Without ReadItLater, to save a web page in your bookmarks in a "read it later" folder or tag, it takes a couple of steps. (Even with Firefox 3's one-click bookmarking, you still have to tag or file the link.) With ReadItLater installed, Firefox gets a checkbox in the address bar next to the regular bookmark star icon. Click on that checkbox to automatically add the current web page to your ReadItLater list in one click. That's it. Now you can get back to work.</p> <p>Alternately, if you don't even want to <i>open</i> the tempting link but want to save it for later, right-click on a link and choose "Read This Link Later" from the context menu.</p> <p><img src="http://lifehacker.com/assets/images/lifehacker/2008/09/ril-contextmenu.png" class="center" width="487" height="266" style="display:block;float:none;" /></p> <p>If you're want to add a bunch of links on a single page to your reading list even more quickly, then activate "Click to Save" mode (Alt+M by default, or click the ReadItLater icon in the status bar). When you do, clicking on any link doesn't open it, it adds it to your reading list. This feature is especially good for shelfing several items of interest you might find on link-heavy pages like the Digg or Lifehacker front page.</p> <h3 style="font-size: 120%; margin-top: 20px;">Check Your Reading List</h3> <p><img src="http://lifehacker.com/assets/images/lifehacker/2008/09/ril-dropdownnoannot.png" width="354" height="619" class="center" align="center"><br> Once you've added a few pages to your ReadItLater list, you can click on the ReadItLater dropdown on the right of Firefox's search box to expand the list of items you've parked there. ReadItLater conveniently sorts the links by oldest added (by default, you can change this), so you see the stuff that's been hanging out there the longest at the top. You can quickly filter the list by tag, page name, site, or URL, too.</p> <p>See that handy number 10 on the ReadItLater toolbar button? That's the number of unread items you have. This feature isn't turned on by default, but it's nice to instantly see how many items are in your reading queue. To turn it on, in ReadItLater's options, under Appearance, check off "Show number of unread items on the toolbar button," as shown.</p> <p><img src="http://lifehacker.com/assets/images/lifehacker/2008/09/ril-showunreadtotal.png" class="center" width="509" height="130" style="display:block;float:none;" /></p> <h3 style="font-size: 120%; margin-top: 20px;">Read Your Pages</h3> <p><img src="http://lifehacker.com/assets/images/lifehacker/2008/09/ril-markasread.png" width="271" height="261" class="right" align="right"> Now that you've built up a reading list, you're eating lunch at your desk and want to do some personal browsing. Click on any link from that list dropdown to visit a page. All done? Simply click the ReadItLater checkbox to mark the item as read and immediately take it off your list. If you want tor permanently save it on your boomarks service of choice, hit the dropdown on that checkbox and pick your bookmark poison.</p> <h3 style="font-size: 120%; margin-top: 20px;">Syncing Your ReadItLater List</h3> <p>One of the really cool features of ReadItLater is that it automatically saves links to your Firefox bookmarks in a folder you specify. So if you're already syncing your bookmarks across computers with the likes of <a href="http://foxmarks.com">Foxmarks</a>, your reading list goes to other computers even if you don't have the ReadItLater extension installed on them (but you don't get its neat interface).</p> <p>ReadItLater has a syncing mechanism built in, too. You set up an RSS feed of your reading items, and then log in with your feed ID and a password to get your list on other computers with ReadItLater installed. Visit ReadItLater's Options dialog, under RSS/Syncing, to set that up.</p> <p><img src="http://lifehacker.com/assets/images/lifehacker/2008/09/ril-syncrss.png" class="center" width="763" height="577" style="display:block;float:none;" /></p> <h3 style="font-size: 120%; margin-top: 20px;">Keyboard Shortcuts and Offline Reading</h3> <p>If clicking around Firefox ain't your bag, baby, ReadItLater has you covered. Customize your keyboard shortcuts for even faster access to your queue in the Options dialog.</p> <p><img src="http://lifehacker.com/assets/images/lifehacker/2008/09/ril-keyboardshortcuts.png" class="center" width="763" height="275" style="display:block;float:none;" /></p> <p>ReadItLater also can save web pages you want to read on an airplane, for instance, to your hard drive for offline access. From the ReadItLater list dropdown, while you're online, click on the "Read Offline" link to make ReadItLater save local copies of the pages on your list.</p> <p>Check out this three minute video demo to see ReadItLater in action.</p> <p><object width="494" height="349"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/mLNfsLpM8zo&rel=0&border=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01&hl=en&fs=1"> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/mLNfsLpM8zo&rel=0&border=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="494" height="349"></object></p> <p>How do you save links of interest to read later? Considering how much time we spend on the web these days, a quick, easy shortcut for going straight to your browser (that's also just off the home row) makes a lot of sense. Still want to use Caps Lock from time to time? Shift+Caps Lock toggles regular Caps Lock behavior. Like the idea behind TabsLock but wish it worked for Firefox? Keep reading to download my own homespun solution for Firefox users.</p> <p>I know Chrome is all the rage right now with all its shiny newness, but&mdash;call me old-fashioned&mdash;my undying love for Firefox hasn't yet wavered. Since the functionality behind TabsLock is relatively trivial to implement, I decided to roll a quick alternative. If you don't want to hear any of the details, go ahead and <a href="http://lifehacker.com/assets/resources/2008/08/TabsLock%20Firefox.exe">download TabsLock Firefox</a> (<a href="http://adampash.com/apps/TabsLock%20Firefox.exe">alternate download link</a>) and enjoy. </p> <p>Still here? Okay, let's take a quick look at how our old friend <a href="http://www.autohotkey.com/">AutoHotkey</a> came to the rescue yet again. Here's the meat of the very simple, lightweight script (you can easily copy and paste the source minus the first three lines into your existing AHK script if you prefer that to running the system tray app). </p> <div class="code">#NoEnv ; Recommended for performance and compatibility with future AutoHotkey releases.<br /> #SingleInstance force<br /> SendMode Input ; Recommended for new scripts due to its superior speed and reliability.<br /> Capslock::<br /> SetTitleMatchMode, 2<br /> IfWinExist, Mozilla Firefox<br /> {<br /> WinActivate<br /> WinWaitActive<br /> Send, ^t<br /> }<br /> else<br /> Run %programfiles%\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe<br /> return<br /> +Capslock::Capslock</div> <p>In a nutshell, when you hit Caps Lock, the script looks to see if you have any windows open with "Mozilla Firefox" in the title (all Firefox windows do by default in Windows). If a Firefox window already exists, TabsLock Firefox activates that window and then opens a new tab with Ctrl+T; if not, TabsLock Firefox just opens a new Firefox window altogether. Finally, the last line of the script allows you to toggle your normal Caps Lock operation when you need it by pressing Shift+Caps Lock (just like TabsLock for Chrome). </p> <p>If you like this idea but have a completely different program you'd like to use it with, just edit the script to match the application you want. And if Chrome has won you over, follow the link below to grab the inspired original TabsLock. If <em>none</em> of this sounds good to you but you wish you did have a better use for your Caps Lock key, check out other ways you can <a href="http://lifehacker.com/software/autohotkey-answers/turn-your-capslock-key-into-a-dedicated-minimize-button-317239.php">use AutoHokey to put your Caps Lock key to good use</a>.</p> <div class="related"><a href="http://tabslock.com/">TabsLock</a> (for Chrome)<br /><a href="http://lifehacker.com/assets/resources/2008/08/TabsLock%20Firefox.exe">TabsLock Firefox</a> (<a href="http://adampash.com/apps/TabsLock%20Firefox.exe">alternate download link</a>)</div> <br style="clear: both;"/> <img alt="" style="border: 0; height:1px; width:1px;" border="0" src="http://www.pheedo.com/img.phdo?i=525e492058cdfd2ee6ee47615b1c424f" height="1" width="1"/> <img src="http://www.pheedo.com/feeds/tracker.php?i=525e492058cdfd2ee6ee47615b1c424f" style="display: none;" border="0" height="1" width="1" alt=""/> <p><a href="http://feeds.gawker.com/~a/lifehacker/full?a=9vPBX5"><img src="http://feeds.gawker.com/~a/lifehacker/full?i=9vPBX5" border="0"></img></a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/lifehacker/full?a=xdrGL"><img src="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/lifehacker/full?i=xdrGL" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/lifehacker/full?a=q2F2L"><img src="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/lifehacker/full?i=q2F2L" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/lifehacker/full?a=e3Yyl"><img src="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/lifehacker/full?i=e3Yyl" border="0"></img></a> <a href="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/lifehacker/full?a=qFeFl"><img src="http://feeds.gawker.com/~f/lifehacker/full?i=qFeFl" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.gawker.com/~r/lifehacker/full/~4/384479626" height="1" width="1"/> [via http://lifehacker.com @ September 5, 2008 @ 8:00pm] Fri, 05 Sep 2008 20:00:00 +0000 http://.feedables.com/story/937475/TabsLock-Puts-Your-Browser-One-Keystroke-Away-Featured-Windows-Download MakeUseOf Your iPhone: Wikipanion http://.feedables.com/go/936015/MakeUseOf-Your-iPhone-Wikipanion <style> .rating1 { width:105px; } .star-rating1{ list-style:none; margin: 0px; padding:0px; width: 100px; height: 20px; position: relative; background: url(http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/plugins/MUOrate/icons/default/star_rating.gif) top left repeat-x; } .star-rating1 la{ padding:0px; margin:0px; /*\*/ float: left; /* */ } .star-rating1 la a{ display:block; width:20px; height: 20px; text-decoration: none; text-indent: -9000px; z-index: 20; position: absolute; padding: 0px; } .star-rating1 la a:hover{ background: url(http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/plugins/MUOrate/icons/default/star_rating.gif) left bottom; z-index: 1; left: 0px; } .star-rating1 a.one-star1{ left: 0px; } .star-rating1 a.one-star1:hover{ width:20px; } .star-rating1 a.two-stars1{ left:20px; } .star-rating1 a.two-stars1:hover{ width: 40px; } .star-rating1 a.three-stars1:hover{ width: 60px; } .star-rating1 a.three-stars1{ left: 40px; } .star-rating1 a.four-stars1{ left: 60px; } .star-rating1 a.four-stars1:hover{ width: 80px; } .star-rating1 a.five-stars1{ left: 80px; } .star-rating1 a.five-stars1:hover{ width: 100px; } </style> <script> $(document).ready(function(){ $("#userrating1").hide(); $("div.rating1").bind("mouseenter", function(){ $("#userrating1").slideDown("normal"); }).bind("mouseleave", function(){ $("#userrating1").slideUp("slow"); }); }); function rate_click(id, n, star){ $('#userrating'+n).load("http://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/plugins/MUOrate/muo_user_rate.php?id="+id+"&n="+n+"&star="+star); } </script> One of my least favorite kinds of iPhone App is the &#8220;web clone.&#8221;  Typically these are little more than a mobile version of a web page kept within the skin of a downloadable App.  The premise of a web clone is that encapsulating the website in the App will make it more convenient to the [...] [via http://www.makeuseof.com @ September 5, 2008 @ 4:01pm] Fri, 05 Sep 2008 16:01:27 +0000 http://.feedables.com/story/936015/MakeUseOf-Your-iPhone-Wikipanion LabelLinks4Gmail Nests Labels in Gmail and Then Some [Featured Greasemonkey User Script] http://.feedables.com/go/938854/LabelLinks4Gmail-Nests-Labels-in-Gmail-and-Then-Some-Featured-Greasemonkey-User-Script <p><img src="http://lifehacker.com/assets/images/lifehacker/2008/09/labellinks4gmail.png" width="154" height="136" align="right" hspace="4" vspace="2" align="right"/>Firefox with Greasemonkey: The LabelLinks4Gmail Greasemonkey scripts creates nested labels in your Gmail sidebar. If the idea sounds familiar, that's probably because the <a href="http://lifehacker.com/software/featured-greasemonkey-user-script/create-nested-labels-in-gmail-with-folders4gmail-276984.php">previously mentioned Folders4Gmail script</a> has been included with <a href="http://lifehacker.com/software/exclusive-lifehacker-download/better-gmail-2-firefox-extension-for-new-gmail-320618.php">Better Gmail</a> for quite some time. The main difference is that LabelLinks4Gmail soups up the sidebar so that clicking on a top level folder will reveal the contents of every label inside that folder&mdash;a feature missing from Folders4Gmail.
